Teaching in Canada: A vast profession under pressure

Résumé

This article presents an overview of the socioprofessional situation for public elementary and high school teachers in Canada. First, the teacher’s importance for Canada is discussed in societal and economic terms. Second, recent and unprecedented changes to the teaching profession due to the transformed social environment of schools and students are addressed. Third, the growing infuence of the economy on defnitions of the education mission is highlighted.
